What exactly is grenadine?
The world of men's elegance is full of interesting textures, pattern combinations and colors. A man who chooses a tie made of grenadine will certainly stand out. Why? Because grenadine is rare material, o unique silk weave and presenting an extraordinary luxuriously.
Therefore grenadine ties is the perfect choice for those looking for high quality and unique style, who do not want to look stenciled.
Grenadine like champagne...
Let's assume for a moment that:
Sparkling wine is a tie.
There are many different sparkling wines, just as there are many different ties.
For example, Cava is a sparkling wine from Spain.
Prosecco is a sparkling wine from Italy.
And real champagne is a sparkling wine originating from the Champagne region of France.
Champagne is restricted term for wines from the Champagne region.
And just as we only deal with champagne if it was produced in Champagne, we can only talk about grenadine if we are dealing with a particular weave of silk, which is not so easy to obtain without knowledge and experience.
Did you know that the grenadine ties we have in our store are handmade, and the material itself is made traditionally on 19th century looms? You can view and purchase them here:
Grenadine tie vs. jacquard tie
As a rule, the grenadine is a jacquard tie, since it is made by weaving the appropriate silk threads together. However, it is worth knowing that a grenadine tie and a jacquard tie are two different types of ties. Some operate these terms interchangeably, which can cause some confusion.
In the photo above, you can see the jacquard on the right and the grenadine tie on the left
Basic differences between a grenadine tie and a jacquard tie
Material
Grenadine is a type of fabric made of silk, which is characterized by its texture (see photo on the right). Grenadine is smooth, no patterns like dots or stripes (unless they are sewn onto it with thread). Jacquard ties, on the other hand, can be made of various materials, such as silk, wool, cotton or synthetics, and their patterns are produced using a special jacquard technique.
Production
Grenadine is woven with a special weave that gives it a three-dimensional texture. As we mentioned earlier, traditionally grenadine is woven on the 19th loom.
Jacquard ties, on the other hand, are made using the jacquard technique, which allows you to create patterns using specially designed weaving cards.
Characteristics
Grenadine, due to its material and special weaving technique, often has subtle and elegant weaves. The grenadine tie is smooth because grenadine is a smooth material.
What's more, a grenadine tie is a one-color tie (because the material is one color).Jacquard ties, on the other hand, can have complex and expressive patterns that are more visible and stand out on the material.
Striped tie? It's not a tie made of grenadine!
Striped ties are the result of a combination of 2 different ways of producing a tie. Therefore, it can be a jacquard tie, but not a tie made of grenadine, which by design is smooth.
To illustrate this topic, let's take burgundy grenadine as an example. How it is created? Take a meter of burgundy plain grenadine (for the record - there is no patterned grenadine) and sew a tie.
If there are to be dots or other small applications on the tie, they can be sewn on by hand or by machine.
Stripes cannot be sewn on in this way. Therefore, there is no combination of striped grenadine ties. However, we can always order ourselves a striped tie in 100% silk, which looks just as great as grenadine. If you want a really quality striped tie, take a look at the category of classic ties.
Knitted tie a grenadine tie
Here, too, it is easy to get confused. Knitted tie is otherwise known as a knitted tie. On the other hand, as we already know, a grenadine tie is a product made of the highest quality silk. However, based on the photos alone, a person who has no experience with fabrics may get confused. This is because visually these ties may look somewhat similar.
The yellow tie in the photo on the right is a grenadine tie. The tie on the left is a knitted tie.
Basic differences between a grenadine tie and a knitted tie
Material
Knitted Tie is made of knitted fabric, usually made of silk or synthetic fibers, creating a distinctive texture (see photo above). The grenadine tie, on the other hand, is woven with silk threads, creating a delicate pattern and texture.
Springiness
Knitted Tie tends to be more flexible and springy due to the knitted fabric, making it comfortable to wear. The grenadine tie is less flexible, but more elegant and luxurious.
The degree of formality
Knitted Tie is more suitable for less formal occasions, such as casual and even smart casual styling. They look great paired with jeans or chinos. Grenadine ties, on the other hand, are more formal and suitable for more elegant outfits, both business and evening (and even for a wedding, read the article What kind of tie for a wedding?).
Differences between a shantung tie and a grenadine tie
Admittedly, these ties are very easy to distinguish, but let's take a look at what they are characterized by. Both shantung ties, as well as ties made of grenadine stand out from the rest because their structure is extremely distinctive.
Pictured: shantung tie on the left, grenadine tie with flowers sewn on the fabric on the right.
Let's look at the differences:
Material
A shantung tie is made from shantung fabric, which can be made of silk, cotton or other fibers. Shandong is characterized by a fine, uneven and slightly rough finish.
The grenadine tie, on the other hand, is made of silk, with the distinctive feature of a texture woven with fine vertical threads.
Appearance
The shantung tie has a fine texture and uneven surface that gives it a subtle and textural look. The surface of such a tie looks a bit like off-track.
The grenadine tie has uniform surface, and the characteristically braided threads give it a unique texture (without the pulling effect).
Formality
Due to its texture, the shantung tie is often chosen for autumn and winter styling, as it works well with visually heavy materials. The level of formality is lower than that of a grenadine tie, so the shantung is more likely to be chosen for looser gatherings with friends.
The grenadine tie is considered a one of the most elegant types of ties (Only printed silk/jacquard silk ties have a higher degree of formality). You can wear grenadine to both a wedding and a corporate meeting.
Ties made of grenadine - garza fina or garza grossa?
Distinguishing grenadine from other types of material for beginners in the subject of men's elegance may not be so easy. Therefore, we hope that we have systematized this topic and it will be easier for you to see all the differences of the different types of ties. It is also worth mentioning that grenadine itself is divided into 2 types...
Garza grossa
It is a thicker woven grenadine than grazza fina, which makes it visually look heavier. Therefore, the garza grossa grenadine tie is, in our opinion, a great option for the autumn-winter period.
With what materials are garza grossa combined? Tweeds, thick wools, etc. optically heavier materials.
Garza fina
It is visually lighter than garza grossa. Ideal for lighter styles and visually light materials ie. for linen, wool or silk.
It is worth knowing that
Garza grossa and garza fina weigh the same, but visually their weight is different due to the type of weave.
